About the Australian Dance and Talent Centre

General Information

The Australian Dance & Talent Centre is the area’s longest established Performing Arts Centre, commencing operation in 1981 as the Beisler Studio of Dance. The directors of the Centre are Philippa and Laurie Beisler, who are both trained high school teachers. Laurie’s specialities are Visual Arts, Film Media, and Set and Backdrop design and construction, whilst Philippa teaches Dance Education at the University of Newcastle (Callaghan Campus) for the Health and Physical Education Faculty in addition to teaching dance as an elective subject for the students training to be Primary school teachers.

In 2005 Philippa was approached by the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and asked to take on the role of Practical Teaching Supervisor for their Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS). This role has involved travelling to other dance studios throughout Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Forster and Morpeth to assist teachers. She has also been a Mentor for ballet teachers who are completing their final year of the CBTS course, helping to guide and nurture the teachers of the future.
Their daughter, Nicole Baker, is the studio manager. She has completed a double degree in Teaching and Early Childhood Studies, and successfully trained the Dance Aerobics team at Jewells for several years, taking out 1st Place in the National Titles twice!! She has also successfully completed her Classical Ballet Teaching Studies course with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).  Nicole is currently lecturing at the University of Newcastle (Ourimbah Campus) in Dance Education, teaching the elective dance course for Primary students, and at the Callaghan Campus instructing the 2nd Year PD/H/PE students.  She is also studying for her Masters Degree in Early Childhood, and has recently become a mum!!   In addition to all that, she is also teaching the Monday Pre-School Performing Arts class (PSPA).

The Studio

In 1995 the ADTC moved to its current address, 16 Torrens Avenue, Cardiff, which is a huge complex covering approximately 3,000 square metres. Extensive renovations have produced a most impressive venue which boasts a Reception area, waiting room (with fridge, microwave, tea and coffee making facilities and television), 6 air-conditioned and mirrored studios, sprung floors, specialist dance floor surfaces, barres, state of the art sound systems, video facilities and beautifully landscaped picnic grounds.
The Centre has also been selected to host a variety of scholarship awards, workshops and seminars on dance education. It is the nominated venue for the RAD Vocational Exams in Newcastle, with students travelling from as far as Queensland, Victoria and South Australia for their exams. This supports the fact that the ADTC students are training in the best studios in the region. The main studio also has a stage built into it, with its own specialised lighting board and modern sound and fold back system. The stage is an excellent training space for students, and the facilities offered to students are unrivalled in the area.

Newsletters & Notes

Students and parents are continually informed of events and other matters relating to the Centre through Newsletters and notes which are distributed regularly. Noticeboards are also located in the waiting room area and out the front of the Reception area, which are used to notify parents and students of upcoming events, or auditions in which students may wish to participate.
